Why nEveresting?

{n}Everesting Recovery was borne of the months spent in moving meditations that constituted Lawrence’s training for the Everesting Run Challenge in 2022

“THE MOST DIFFICULT
CLIMBING CHALLENGE IN THE WORLD”

While planning for this event, I was struck by the potential this ambitious, goal-oriented approach to recovery could have for others. The idea wasn’t necessarily to scale the heights of Everest. Instead, it was about fostering a supportive community that encourages individual growth by pushing the boundaries of our comfort zones. In doing so, we can break barriers and accomplish what we once deemed “impossible.”

Inspiration for self-discovery & peace through blistering growth. One step at a time.

As a lifelong runner and former ultra-marathoner, I was immediately captivated by the challenge of “Everesting.” Its appeal was twofold; it not only resonated with my competitive spirit but also offered a positive outlet to support my recovery from addiction. My decades-long battle with alcoholism and various other “isms” underscored the value of incorporating consistent, balanced training into my recovery regimen. Despite the daunting difficulty, I recognized the multi-dimensional growth – physical, mental, and spiritual – that “Everesting” could foster.

For some, the pivotal goal may be as seemingly simple as maintaining sobriety – even if just for today. In the early stages of recovery, the mantras “one day at a time” and “just for today” are frequently echoed. For many, making it through a single day might feel like an unyielding eternity.

The enduring 12-step programs were designed to offer a spiritual pathway to freedom from addiction, guiding us towards a serene, sober life. “Everesting” embraces these 12-step principles and traditions, as well as other recovery methods. We build upon the foundations laid before us, inspiring our members to incorporate robust structures into their lives that can withstand life’s myriad adversities.

Community sustains sobriety & promotes progress

Attaining sobriety is merely the first step of the recovery journey. Maintaining sobriety and living a fulfilling life require continual vigilance, a supportive community of like-minded individuals, and a plan. Our aim is to become a pivotal resource in the recovery space, offering a diverse group of fellow “climbers” to provide mutual support and motivation. Within this community, we will create plans, shatter expectations, and advance – one step at a time, one day at a time, one “impossible” goal at a time.

Our addictions may lay dormant but they never truly rest, hence the inner addict within us remains ever vigilant. It is from this premise that our approach to recovery should be “Everesting,” never complacent.

At present, I will be funding the growth and maintenance of this group with proceeds from my professional tech work, in hopes of cultivating an organic community. My vision for the future is to make this group self-sustaining through our own collective contributions.
